Every year Katmai National Park hosts a competition to rank the park's bears as they bulk up for the winter.
The competition has become an unexpected internet phenomenon.
We caught up with ranger Christine Loberg to talk about the bears.
Update!
The Fat Bear crowning was September 29th and 89 Backpack emerged victorious!
He beat out 910 by 5,091 votes as the winner of the 12th annual Katmai National Park and preserve Fat Bear week. This year's competition saw record breaking participation with over 2.5 million votes cast.
89 comes from a fat bear legacy as the son of 2019 campion, Holly.
When 89 was a first-year cub back in 2006 he was often seen climbing onto his mother's back as they swam in the brooks river, earning him the name Backpack.
