Along a bend in the Wye River near Queenstown, work crews have nearly completed a transformative renovation. What used to be the Aspen Institute is now the newest hang out for the Hole in the Wall Gang camp.
This camp, the vision of the late actor Paul Newman, aims to bring the classic summer camp experiences – crafts, games, songs and fun - to hospital-bound children with rare sand ultra unique medical conditions.
Hilary Axtmayer, the chief program officer, invited Radio Chesapeake for a recent tour.
The Wye River location is only the second branch of the Hole-in-the-Wall-Gang camp. The original location in Connecticut opened in the 1980s, and the staff is applying what they have learned there over the years to the new campus in Maryland, scheduled to open early 2026.
