Handsell, the historic site near Vienna, is beginning construction on a 2,500 square-foot building that will provide indoor space for displays and programs.
The Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance that keeps and operates the site has raised close to $700,000 to build the center. It will be styled like old barns seen on Eastern Shore farms in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The organization supports programs highlighting the three peoples who lived on the site over recent centuries - Native Americans, European settlers and African Americans who lived enslaved and later freed on the grounds around the preserved colonial manor house.
