Romantic big band music for Valentine's Day week. Features a special recording of my own grandfather, Eddie Shearer, from an old radio broadcast in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Also featuring Duke Ellington, the rivals Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller, Billy Eckstine and Coleman Hawkins. And a special treat from Martin Sjostedt and the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra playing "The Wedding" by South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim.

We start with the deep cut "Ground Hog" from Duke Pearson, and then a short tribute to the trombone, including Michael Davis and Melba Liston. We get upbeat and groovy and then play it out with some big band renditions of John Williams' film music.

We take off in flight with "Airmail Special", "Flying Home", "Flight of the Foo Birds" and "Into the Sky" (that's Ella, Basie, Lionel and Makoto Ozone's No Name Horses respectively). Then a tribute to Jaco Pastorius and some hot Latin big band to round out the hour. It's a good one, don't miss it.

Then the new release from the 3 Cohens and the WDR Big Band. We start with some big band arrangements of classic Disney tunes, then dig through the decades of Count Basie. Then end with some big band Bill Evans, and the cool Zoot Suite from drummer Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition.

We track the evolution of the jazz standard "Blue Skies" into Thelonius Monk's "In Walked Bud". Then a set of Broadway melodies from Richard Rogers. And finally, Big Band gets the blues.

We start with the first recorded music ever played in space, and then get some big band takes on space travel from Duke Ellington, Sun Ra, Gene Krupa and others. A special appearance from Mars and Maria Schneider's "Sputnik".

Songs of progress and perseverance celebrating Black History Month. Includes a tribute to Dorchester County's own Harriett Tubman from John Coltrane. Classic tracks from Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Mahalia Jackson, as well as the new and brilliant "Sister Rosa" from Christian McBride.
