Cambridge Mayor Lajan Cephas Bey announced that she is taking leave from public office for several weeks as she recovers at home from surgery.
In a press release by the city, the mayor indicated she was experiencing “a temporary inability to 'discharge the powers and duties of the Office of Mayor.' This is a temporary situation."
The statement quoted her as saying, “I expect this temporary inability to last approximately two to three weeks.” She did not specify the reason for her surgery.
On social media, Cephas Bey extended thanks for well-wishes and prayers, and asked for privacy as she recovers.
In her absence, her brother, City Council President Sputty Cephas, will assume the role of acting mayor, according to City Manager Glenn Steckman. In case Sputty Cephas is unable to tend to any given matter, the mayor designated Ward 5 Commissioner Brian Roche to conduct meetings or otherwise act in her stead.
Lajan Cephas Bey has been an active mayor, working with other municipalities, making appearances at public events and testifying before various legislative committees and agency commissions in addition to advocating for several new commissions she appointed.
Steckman said he has maintained regular conversations with the mayor since her surgery. He declined to disclose any details on her health.
The city press release stated the mayor intends to inform Steckman when she feels sufficiently recovered. At that time, it said, she will resume her regular duties.
