Board Moves to Replace 5 Dorchester Schools

The Dorchester County Board of Education is moving ahead with a multi-year plan to replace five aging elementary schools.

That process will lead to a decision in the coming months on which school gets rebuilt first.

At an April 16 meeting, Superintendent Jymil Thompson and district officials outlined a system to rank Hurlock, Maple, Sandy Hill, Vienna and Warwick elementary schools.

The rankings will be based on enrollment, building condition, educational adequacy and overall cost.

Officials say earlier studies show it makes more sense to replace the schools rather than renovate them.

The board is expected to review the rankings in May and take formal action in June.
