In 1954, The Swanson Company produced their first frozen dinners.Turkey, chicken and beef were the original entree choices, with fish coming along later. With over half of American households owning televisions by the mid 1950's, the Swanson brothers called their frozen meals "TV dinners," suitable for eating on a folding tray in one's living room while watching television. Webb Pierce had more songs reach #1 on the Billboard Country chart in 1954 than anyone else. Three of his releases spent a total of 29 weeks at the top of the chart. In the early 1970's, Pierce built a $75,000 guitar-shaped swimming pool at his home; it attracted so many tourists that neighbors obtained a court order barring them. On the next Rockin' Randall Classic Country Call-In Request Show, we'll continue to spotlight specific years in Classic Country music history, highlighting the greatest songs of the year. Also, I will look back on the top news, sports and entertainment stories of that year. I hope you can join me Saturday morning from 6-9 for Classic Country by request and the very best from the year of 1954 on 91.7 WHCP-A Great Place To Be and NPR for the Mid-Shore.
